Los Angeles Lakers star Russell Westbrook is not having his best year in his first season playing in his hometown, and it appears support is minimal. But, he does have the support of one of his peers.
“I told him when we played them in L.A. a couple of days ago that I respect how he’s handled the whole year, just in terms of everything he’s been saying and how he’s been handling himself and protecting his family,” Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry told Yahoo Sports. “It is the nature of the beast.
And in a certain perspective, they build you up to break you down. The real ones who have done amazing things in this league know what that means. He’s a professional, and I’m proud of the way he’s conducting himself, and I’m there for him.”
The Lakers were constructed for a championship-or-bust run, but up to this point, it has been a disastrous bust with the team nine games under .500 with 17 games remaining in the regular season.

The 14-year veteran has largely been the target of disdain by the fan base as he’s among the league leaders in turnovers (four per game), and he’s shooting 28.2% from 3-point range.
The franchise has been tormented by a lack of youth and is devoid of chemistry due to the numerous injuries sustained throughout the season. Anthony Davis and LeBron James have missed 28 games and 18 games, respectively.
Despite Westbrook’s struggles, he’s been available for all but one contest.
The nine-time All-Star is not a perfect player, but his issues are glaring as they come from badly missed jump shots and missed layups. The fit hasn’t worked out, prompting frustrated Lakers fans to heckle their starting point guard with taunts of “Westbrick.”

Westbrook recently stated that he views the jeer as an insult to his name, and voiced he would confront whoever uttered the taunt. He even discussed tweets from his wife, Nina, revealing the family is receiving death threats from anonymous users on social media. Westbrook said it’s reached a point where he’s uncomfortable bringing his wife and kids to the games out of concern of what they may hear.
“The fan perspective, it is kind of B.S. when it crosses the line in terms of attacking somebody personally, their name, and not keeping it to just basketball,” Curry told Yahoo Sports. “That’s why we’re all here is because of basketball.

But at the end of the day, you have to do what you have to do to speak up for yourself and also understand that the guys that know what’s going on in this league respect the type of player he is. Russ definitely has my support.”
