CONTRACT UPDATE: Mick Schumacher fans react as his contract talks leaks. Read more…
Mick Schumacher’s contract talks with Haas have reportedly been put on hold, according to reports coming from his native Germany.
Mick’s contract with the team is up at the end of the season and talks have been underway over him extending with them into 2023.
Indeed, it’s that time of the year where we see deals and moves tied up for drivers with the summer break here, but one already decided move is reportedly behind a sudden change in stance involving Mick’s situation.
Apparently, according to RTL, Sebastian Vettel’s exit from Aston Martin had given Mick some extra bargaining strength in talks with Haas as that could have been a viable option for him to switch to for ’23.
However, Aston’s driver line-up for 2023 was confirmed almost as quickly as it opened up with Fernando Alonso getting the gig, and the German outlet claims that Mick now has very few options open to him in terms of a drive next year.

They suggest it’s essentially Haas or nothing in terms of competing on the grid for 2023 and, that said, the advantage at the negotiation table now lies back with the team, and they can take their time over whether to offer Mick a seat for next year or to turn to another driver.
Schumacher, in fairness, has been driving really well of late, putting in some fine performances at the likes of Silverstone and Spielberg to earn his first-ever championship points in F1, in turn alleviating some of the pressure that seemed to be growing on him.

Keep driving like that after the summer, then, and this situation won’t be half as threatening to his immediate F1 future as it might sound, as he’ll force Haas into offering him fresh terms.
