Mercedes still haven’t been able to decide on who their reserve driver would be for the 2023 F1 season. There have been speculations that Daniel Ricciardo might be an option for the reserve driver role, but Mercedes are yet to confirm anything.
Daniel Ricciardo announced that he won’t be racing in Formula 1 in the 2023 season after he was released from McLaren. However, the Australian has made it clear that he has intentions of sticking around in the paddock. He plans to do that by taking up the role of a reserve driver in any of the teams.
There have been speculations that Ricciardo might join Mercedes or Red Bull as their reserve drivers. However, neither Ricciardo nor any of the two teams have confirmed anything related to this.
Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes, was asked about their team’s link to Ricciardo. He replied promptly that the eight-time race winner was speaking to multiple teams about being their reserve driver, including Red Bull.
Toto Wolff said, “For us, we very much like him, he’s a great character.”

“But we are not in a position yet to decide who is going to be reserve and third driver,” he continued.
Mercedes are in need of a reserve driver
Mercedes are currently without a reserve driver for 2023. This is because both Nyck De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne, their two reserve drivers, have signed up with other teams.
Nyck De Vries is set to drive full time at AlphaTauri. As for Vandoorne, he is joining Aston Martin as their reserve driver alongside Felipe Drugovich
Toto Wolff admitted that the personality and experience that Daniel Ricciardo brings with him would benefit any team who are going to work with him. But Toto doesn’t want to comment on anything yet because the team hasn’t made any concrete decision yet.

As for Daniel Ricciardo, he said that he wants to take the time that is required to rebuild himself. For that, he is ready to take some time off from the sport.
However, he is excited to come back to F1 in 2024. If something works out for him, then he would love to come back and fight at the front of the grid in 2024.
