Rafael Nadal named their adoptive son

Sant Llorenç wanted to pay tribute to the tennis player Rafael Nadal and all the volunteers who helped the town recover from the tragic torrent of October 9, 2018. Four years have passed and no one forgets what happened. Life goes on and what remained in the memory were the expressions of solidarity that the town received. People from all over came to Sant Llorenç to contribute their grain of sand, either by cleaning or through donations. Now the Town Hall has left a testimony of its gratitude and today, Thursday, it has approved in full to change the name of Calle Génova to that of Rafel Nadal and Jaume Santandreu square, one of the places most affected, by Plaça de la Solidaritat.

After Rafael Nadal was named the adoptive son of Sant Llorenç in an extraordinary plenary session on October 13, 2021, the rest of the agreement adopted that day is now fulfilled. Due to his connection with the town and his actions in the torrent and in gratitude to the tennis player for his solidarity and the economic contribution of one million euros, this street has been dedicated to him. The tennis player is the only adoptive child.

The Jaume Santandreu square was badly affected. The Town Hall promoted a project to remodel it and made a comprehensive reform. He acquired one of the affected houses to add land to the public space where a sculpture with the name of ‘Help’ by the artist Amparo Sard has been placed, some hands that symbolize human solidarity towards the town of Sant Llorenç the days after the tragedy.

To pay tribute to all the volunteers, people, entities, and institutions that contributed their help in cleaning or repair work, economic or material contributions, today it is called Plaça de la Solidaritat. With these two changes, the City Council wants to continue to thank, years later, this wave of solidarity in the face of the 2018 tragedy.
