Kyle Petty provide retirement update as he draws an interesting parallel between Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr
Following the Toyota Save Mart 350, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr racked up his second win of the season with an emphatic last-minute rally, edging out Kyle Busch to the second place. With a much-deserved victory, not only Truex Jr brought Toyota’s 2nd road course victory, but the JGR driver also redeemed himself of last year’s slump as he held off his former rival, Busch.
Following his win, former NASCAR driver and NBC NASCAR analyst, Kyle Petty fired off fresh speculations as the veteran cited a few examples. Speaking to the host Nate Ryan in the popular NASCAR on NBC podcast, Petty drew a peculiar comparison between the Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick and the JGR driver as he brought out another instance to prove his point.
NASCAR veteran Truex Jr proved his mettle once again, winning the road course at Sonoma for the fourth time as he edged out his former teammate, the Richard Childress Racing driver, Kyle Busch. The NBC analyst reflected on Truex Jr’s stellar rally as he passed car after car to come out victorious. Ryan quizzed him with a peculiar question, “What do you make of where Martin Truex Jr is here? A year later, 2 victories — it seems like he’s been reinvigorated.”
Petty dived into his answer by comparing the JGR driver’s slump from last year to Kevin Harvick‘s case this year. Petty really made the fans eager to lend their ears when he pointed out the obvious facts about older drivers.

Citing the great Jimmie Johnson and various other big names of the sport, Petty reflected on the retirement as he fired off speculations. He said, “If you go back and talk to a lot of guys about their last couple of years in the sport, they’ll all point 2 or 3 years earlier and say I should’ve quit there, I should’ve retired then.” Petty later pointed to the elephant in the room as he asked, “Will Martin be that guy, that he has a great year and says I’m out? I’m gone? I’m not gonna have those 2 years fall off, that one year fall off?”
A skeptical Petty also added, “It will be interesting to see where his head is on that you know because we’ve all seen the backside of what careers do.” While the #19 driver seemed out of form or as Petty coins it, “one foot out,” references were made to veterans like Harvick who revealed this as his final year in the Cup Series. Petty compared Harvick’s situation to the JGR drivers.
As the veteran teases fans’ curiosity, Petty reflected on Harvick’s latest performances as the veteran is clearly slacking off. This being his last year, the analyst also shared his thoughts as he mentioned Truex Jr’s current form, he said, “He is one foot out, he is already in the booth and we all know that and he knows it. So, it takes the edge off him.
“I think Martin was just a little off, I thought that he was one foot out. But I think [this year] he’s both feet in, elbows up, and hammer down.”
With Martin Truex Jr bringing home the much-needed win, MTJ is back on top of the points table with 2 wins and 5 impressive top-5 finishes, followed closely by HMS speedster, William Byron.
